Canadian universities, their master’s and doctoral programs are open to the world and international students

Masters and doctoral programs in Canada

In the last ten years, Canada’s popularity among international students seeking education abroad has been growing, but many Canadian universities are not yet experiencing a significant influx. The number of international students in Canada does not exceed 75,000.

Universities and degrees

Along with other leading Canadian universities, McGill University in Montreal is a recognized center for the best undergraduate and doctoral students from around the world. Isabel Daoust, director of admission at the university, says: „At the postgraduate level, about 2,000 international students are enrolled in various programs, which is almost 21% of all postgraduate students at our university.”

Daoust believes that while academic prominence is a major factor in increasing the influx of international students, the dynamic and multicultural environment of major Canadian cities has also played an important role in recent years. „I believe that international students who study in Montreal have an exceptional cultural experience, as Montreal is one of the cities with the largest number of students,” she says. „The city is pulsating, French and English are intertwined here, and its four universities are making the experience of being in it is unique.”

There is a group of leading universities in Canada known as the Group of Thirteen (G13). These universities are among the most knowledge-intensive in the country and specialize in providing joint research programs. G13 members:

University of Alberta University of British Columbia University of Calgary Dalhousie University Laval University McGill University McMaster University University of Montreal University of Ottawa Queen’s University University of Toronto University of Waterloo University of Western Ontario

A number of other Canadian universities are equally well known and offer curricula and research programs in a wide range of subject areas. Typically, three different types of degrees are offered:

Master’s Degree-Based Curriculum: Requires successful completion of a specific master’s degree program and typically takes one or two years Research Master’s degree: requires successful completion of both a master’s degree program and a master’s thesis, and typically takes two years. Students usually choose dissertation topics in consultation with the supervisor, although many universities require that the field of study be specified upon admission. PhD or PhD: requires the successful completion of original research and the defense of a dissertation, which makes a significant contribution to the development of knowledge in the chosen field. PhDs usually require two or three years of full-time graduate study, although there may be longer periods of research and dissertation writing.

Admission rules

Although the requirements and procedures for admission to Canada vary from institution to institution, a bachelor’s degree with honors (or equivalent) or high academic performance is generally required for admission to the master’s program. Master’s programs that are career-oriented often require experience in the intended field of study. A doctoral program usually requires a high level of achievement at the master’s level. Other factors considered for admission include formal assessment inserts, test results (required for certain professional master’s programs), letters of recommendation from faculty or colleagues, and a personal description of the applicant’s academic and career aspirations explaining why he or she is applying for the program … …

Funding and scholarships

The best source of funding is usually individual universities and colleges, many of which offer a wide variety of scholarships that cover the cost of tuition or living expenses, and sometimes both.

Many scholarship decisions are based solely on academic performance and therefore financial assistance is not discussed upon admission. The Canadian government, as well as a large number of individual universities, offers a number of scholarships for undergraduate and doctoral students. There is a free service that coordinates most of the scholarships. A number of scholarships that offer tuition and living expenses are funded by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.

Work in Canada

All foreign undergraduates and doctoral students have a work permit while studying at the hospital. To do this, foreign students must study at a hospital in the relevant state higher education institution for at least six months, before applying for a job. Educational institutions must sign an agreement with the province or territory in which they are located to participate in the work program.

Most students studying in Poland, starting from the second semester, combine study with work

Part-time work while studying in Poland

Most students receiving higher education in Poland, starting from the second semester, combine study with work, thus meeting the standards that are common in developed countries. This allows not only to earn for their own needs, but also has a very positive effect on the development of personality, the education of such qualities as self-organization, perseverance, hard work, respect for work and earned money.

For example, for an hour of work in a Warsaw supermarket, placing goods on shelves or handing out promotional materials, you can earn 10-15 zlotys or 2.3-3.3 €, which can be a great addition to the student budget.
